Designing Offline-First Mobile Architectures with Resilient Delta Sync

Key strategies for managing SQLite transactions, conflict resolution rules, and background synchronization in unreliable network conditions.

Building applications that assume constant, high-speed connectivity is a recipe for user frustration. Whether users are on subway commutes, in airplane mode, or working in rural agricultural fields, software should work seamlessly regardless of connectivity.

### Local-First State as Source of Truth
In an offline-first architecture, the remote API server is not the primary database—the local device database is. Every user action (create, update, delete) commits immediately to local SQLite storage with optimistic UI feedback.

A background mutation queue records every change as an immutable event:

```json
{
"mutation_id": "uuid-v4",
"entity": "inspection_record",
"action": "update",
"payload": { "status": "completed" },
"timestamp": 1756801200
}
```

### Deterministic Conflict Resolution
When devices reconnect after hours or days offline, merge conflicts are inevitable. Depending on the domain, three conflict resolution strategies are standard:

1. **Last-Write-Wins (LWW) with Monotonic Clocks**: Acceptable for simple fields (e.g., status flags), but risky when multiple users edit related records.
2. **Field-Level Diffing**: Rather than replacing entire JSON records, synchronize discrete field deltas so non-conflicting edits merge cleanly.
3. **Event-Sourced Append Logs**: The safest pattern. Instead of overwriting records, all clients append new events to an immutable log that both local and cloud stores replay.

### Background Sync and Battery Optimization
Constant background polling rapidly drains battery life and triggers OS-level process throttles. Use OS-native background task schedulers (such as Android WorkManager or iOS BackgroundTasks) that defer network sync until the device is connected to Wi-Fi or charging.
